The cars of which there is a great selection all look great and I love the way they move on the track and also get super dirty as you race! This is where you will be unlocking new tracks and cars as you progress. You start with a bit of a clunker of a rally car, but you can build it up with upgrades and get access to new cars. Certain cars perform better on certain kinds of tracks so there is a fair bit of strategy at play here.
The actual racing gameplay is great. It does lean slightly more towards the sim end of the spectrum, but that is not a bad thing. Timing your corners right, dealing with the aggressive AI smashing into you, and knowing when to break are just a few of the things to consider, not to mention more in-depth stuff like knowing if all-wheel drive is what you need!
There is more than enough here for hardcore racing enthusiasts, but not at the expense of the fun. I was very impressed with Cross Racing Championship I wish more racing games would take this approach to the sim way of doing things. This game shows that you can have a realistic racing game, but also have it still be a lot of fun.
It may start off a little slow, but this is a truly awesome racing game and one that is very easy for me to recommend. It covers rallycross, a motorsport that makes use of both man-made and natural surfaces; and also offers you the chance to slide around in autocross, off-road, rally-sprint, rally, road-racing and circuit-racing.
The scepticism continued even once the game was installed. The menus, and front end graphics are very basic, but don't let this or the simple start put you off. When you get racing and spend some time with the game it's obvious where the design time has been spent.
The game seems to have tons of vehicles, many of which are unlocked as you progress, and all of them handle and perform differently and depending on what track you are racing on and weather conditions, it's a tactical decision which vehicle you pick. CRC does a good job of balancing being a serious simulator or a fun racer and as mentioned you can configure it towards the side that you prefer.
After a few play races I headed for the career mode of the game. It seems very simple and easy at first, but all the game is doing is getting you ready for what lies ahead. The races are fast and furious, you start as a lowly stock car racer with very few cars to choose from and work your way up.
The races get tougher, the choice of cars larger but the fun never ends, if anything it just grows with each unlock. Idiots like me can keep the game more towards the non-serious side but those petrol heads out there get to tweak cars and look at deciding what chassis and tires are going to be best for the upcoming courses and races. Other than racing against your friends the online multiplayer doesn't have a lot of use, it would need a larger online community for that.
One of the few drawbacks to this game is the difficulty level. Even on the amateur setting it is very difficult to even place in a race, mainly because the first car you're given is underpowered.
Since the races are so difficult, progression into the later parts of the game is very difficult. Beginners will need a little practice on some of the tracks before they can hope to progress in the career mode. Cross Racing Championship provides a unique blend of simulation and arcade style racing that will attract fans from both genres. Allowing the user to pick how realistic they want the game gives this game an edge over others. Multiple options for multiplayer action means you have plenty of ways to enjoy the game with friends.
Progressing through the career mode will take some patience and effort but if you're willing to put in the time and you should it will more than pay off in the end.
